Only Daz taking the start this time, Geoff was going to but pulled out!? Anyway guess what? Another windy bad day in Darley Moor: the wind capital of England!!
The 90 strong field benefitted from a hard tail wind in the straight and from the gun Darren was active with good legs, getting into 2 breaks early on both lasting half a lap.
With 15 of the 22 laps still remaining Daz gave chase after a lone escape from a rider who he had already been away with (An ex pro who we later found out that Duncan knows. LOL!!). 3 other lads came over to the break and for the next 5 laps Daz was in a world of pain!!
Eventually things calmed down and the breakaway began to work well together, reaching 35mph on the tail wind straight every lap (killing me).
With 5 laps to go the gap to the break had increased to around 2 minutes and the break was sure they had the win in the bag. Still working hard as they reached the bell, the bunch could no longer be sighted and had given up (The fact riders from Wills Wheels were chasing made it all the sweeter...can’t wait till Thursday’s Chain Gang).
As the break reached the head wind section, two very, very strong riders kicked causing a split in the break. Daz chased at 26mph into the head wind but was only holding them. Asking for help from his co breakaway partners the speed dropped to 24mph and the two were away (Gutted!!) As the three remaining riders turned for the sprint they could see the other riders only 15 bike lengths in front but as much as Darren tried he could not close the gap by being jumped at the line for 3rd (by number 40 sitting on the wheel for the whole break. Kn*b).
Darren finished 4th beating the ex-pro into 5th...Winner!!
